Swedish backpackers badly injured in fall at Rome’s Colosseum

Two Swedish backpackers experienced first-hand what it was like to be drunk in Rome on Saturday.

Two Swedish tourists were seriously injured when they were rescued from the Colosseum after falling through the floor. The pair had allegedly spent the night in the ancient amphitheater drinking beer.

According to The Local, the emergency services were called after the pair, who were only identified as Petr and Grete, were found “with an unconcious and obviously drunk state” in the underground facility.

Rome has become a destination for drunken tourists over the past year, and last month one woman was filmed stripping naked at Rome’s Sistine Chapel, apparently in an attempt to wake up people around her.

Luckily, the pair managed to summon the attention of their friend just in time. He was able to summon his relatives who told the emergency services, and the firefighters put the pair in a car and took them to a nearby hospital.

Petr and Grete were found in “bad condition” and were taken to the city’s Molise hospital and are now in a stable condition, Rome’s fire brigade said in a statement on Saturday.
