CNN’S Safer Schools Project tracks school shooting victims

It’s been almost two years since a school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas, where a 19-year-old with a troubled past killed 10 people.

His victims included children ages 7 to 10. It was a tragedy that never should have happened, but it did.

Since that tragedy, CNN has tracked what appears to be more than 60 cases of alleged attackers killing and wounding children in schools across the United States.

And the school shootings don’t stop when the summer classes end. CNN found another school shooting around the country on Thursday night.

“As we have to continually remind the nation, mass shootings that target our schools have been all too commonplace,” said Jody Vrooman, the CNN editor of education who is leading the project.

“But this year has marked a new dark chapter in the carnage in our schools as 12 people, many of them elementary school students, were killed by a former student who entered his school armed with a shotgun and a revolver.”

CNN’s Tracee Wilkins and Deirdre Walsh will visit the Rochester, New York, area this weekend, and will be joined by school and government officials as they provide their updates from the community.
