As new Toronto cafe takes over, a beloved downtown institution may close

TORONTO — The current CaféTO lease expires in November and the city has recommended that the business stay open for another 20 years.

City Council could vote Wednesday on the recommendation, which requires 60 percent approval.

Once CaféTO exits the downtown area in November, C’danger, a new cafe moving into the location, will take over. That restaurant is scheduled to open next year.

In Toronto, fewer than 50 of the 170 hotels and restaurants in the greater downtown area remain commercial, according to the city. In an effort to rejuvenate the downtown core, the city has tried to lure hotel chains to invest in the area, such as Choice Hotels, Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott.

The city has plans to redevelop a block of Wardman Street, which would include adding retail and entertainment options.
